TRAINING POLICIES & GUIDELINES
A prerequisite for taking any BSP training is a current membership in a regulated mental health care profession. BSP Phase One and Phase Two training courses are specialised courses designed by Dr David Grand to teach Brainspotting techniques to mental health practitioners to use with clients within the practitioner’s current scope of training and practice. Brainspotting trainings do not provide basic training in trauma informed therapy or basic counselling skills. Brainspotting is a tool to add to your existing therapeutic skill set.
The BSP Training team presumes participants have a mature level of interpersonal competency, good communication skills, a working knowledge of therapeutic/counselling frameworks, and sufficient self-regulation skills to manage their own needs during the course.
Safety is a necessary requirement for learning. It is the responsibility of the BSP trainer and assistant/s as well as all participants to establish and maintain a feeling of the safety within the group so that learning can occur. If a participant in a training is unable to self- regulate adequately, or demonstrates rude, disrespectful or disruptive behaviour, they will be asked to leave.
Scope of Practice Participants are reminded to use Brainspotting only within their existing scope of practice, both during trainings and in their practice..
Experiential Practice Sessions: BSP training courses include experiential exercises. Your participation in these training exercises will help you appreciate the unique power and effectiveness of Brainspotting from both the client and therapist chairs. During demonstrations and practice sessions, as a “client” you will be using your real issues. You are responsible for managing your own safety. You may opt to “pass” at any point on any individual or group activity or demonstration that you are not comfortable with. This is not a venue for deep personal therapy, nor for detailed academic debate.
Personal Therapy & Clinical Supervision: It is presumed that participants can access supervision and/or therapeutic support if they need it after the training for processing personal matters that may get brought up during course training exercises. Inevitably, when we are working with the subcortical brain, old issues may emerge. It is the participant’s responsibility to avail themselves of appropriate therapeutic support after the training finishes. Please speak to the trainer if any personal issues brought up during the class become a difficulty.
BSP Training Format: In alignment with all International BSP Training, there is a combination of the following: Lecture with Powerpoint Slides; live demonstrations with volunteer trainees, practice of “Set Ups” and techniques in pairs, using real issues (not role play); debrief, comments and questions. Trainings are not a time for detailed academic debate about any topics covered in the course, nor are demos meant to be full therapy sessions.
Confidentiality: It is expected that all participants maintain the confidentiality of all private material shared by all participants throughout the workshop.
The above Policy and Guidelines are in part with thanks to Dr Roby Abeles and the Brainspotting Australia Pacific team.
Phase 1
This immersive 3-day training will teach participants the key concepts of Brainspotting. By the end of this training, you will be competent in identifying and processing Brainspots. You will also learn the phenomenological approach that underpins strategies for Brainspotting. This training will give participants powerful tools which will enable their clients to quickly and effectively focus and process through the deep brain sources of many emotional, somatic and performance problems.
By the end of this incredible 3 day training you will…
Understand the theory and the components of Brainspotting
Embody the learning of the dual attunement frame, consisting of the relational attunement, accurately focused and framed by the neurobiological attunement and attuned presence which is the core of Brainspotting and the resource model.
Be able to utilise the following techniques:
Outside window will help you observe and learn to track the micro-movements of your client, searching for reflective responses. When a Brainspot is activated, the deep brain appears to reflectively signal the therapist, beyond the awareness of the client’s neocortex. You will literally learn how the body indicates the trauma processing access points.
Inside window will allow you to work together with the client to use the client’s felt sense of somatic activation to locate Brainspots. An incredible and collaborative way for the client, the therapist and the issue to forge a powerful alliance together.
Gazespotting is the most natural form of Brainspotting, whereby the client’s fixed gaze can be harnessed to process activation. This approach is extremely helpful in utilising Brainspotting both in the room or when working online.
Brainspotting Resource model uses an adapted and contained frame for clients who become overwhelmed.
PHASE 2
This immersive 3-day training will review the key concepts of Brainspotting, and offer new Frames to utilize, with a focus on Resource.
By the end of this training, you will have a solid understanding of the different techniques that can be used for individuals that may have difficulty with overwhelm and dysreguation. This training will give participants powerful tools which will enable their clients to quickly and effectively focus and process through the deep brain sources of many emotional, somatic and performance problems from a more resourced frame.
By the end of this incredible 3 day training you will…
Be able to utilise the following techniques:
One-Eye Brainspotting including the use of One-Eye goggles.
3 Dimensional Brainspotting using the “Z-Axis” of Brainspotting close and far, this includes Convergence Therapy which expands the Z-Axis to activate the vagus nerve through the ocular cardiac reflex.
Rolling Brainspotting with slow eye tracking stopping briefly on each Brainspot.
Inside-Outside Brainspotting where both reflexive responses and client sense of highest activation are used together to find Brainspots.
Advanced Resource Model. This will entail combining the resource aspects of One-Eye and Z Axis Brainspotting. This addresses working with clients with Very Complex PTSD and those outside of the Brainspotting Window of Tolerance.
You will get an opportunity to observe Brainspotting demonstrations from the trainer, as well as experience Brainspotting whilst working in pairs with colleagues.
In the training, we will focus on the utilisation and integration of Brainspotting theory and practice into your daily practice and ongoing treatment. The training includes working with both activation and with client’s presenting with dissociation states.
